To configure Magento's default robots.txt file for better SEO, follow these steps:
- Log in to your Magento admin panel and go to System > Configuration > Design > Search Engine Robots.
- Set the Default Robots dropdown to "INDEX, FOLLOW". This allows search engines to index and crawl your site’s pages.
- Set the CMS Pages section to "INDEX, FOLLOW". This allows search engines to index and crawl your site’s CMS pages.
- Set the Categories section to "INDEX, FOLLOW". This allows search engines to index and crawl your category pages.
- Set the Products section to "INDEX, FOLLOW". This allows search engines to index and crawl your product pages.
- Set the Cart section to "NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW". This prevents search engines from indexing or following the pages in the shopping cart.
- Set the Checkout section to "NOINDEX, NOFOLLOW". This prevents search engines from indexing or following the pages in the checkout process.
- Set the Customer Account section to "NOINDEX, FOLLOW". This prevents search engines from indexing the pages in the customer account area, but allows them to follow the links in that area.
- Set the Sitemap section to "INDEX, FOLLOW". This allows search engines to access your site’s sitemap and crawl its pages.
- Save your changes and test your robots.txt file to ensure that it is properly configured.
By configuring Magento’s default robots.txt file in this way, you can optimize your site for SEO and ensure that search engines are able to properly index and crawl your pages.
