The purpose of the robots.txt file is to specify which pages or sections of a website should not be crawled or indexed by search engines. This file is placed in the root directory of a website so that search engine crawlers can easily locate and read it.

By properly configuring the robots.txt file, website owners can control the behavior of search engine crawlers and prevent them from accessing certain pages or directories. This can be useful in various scenarios, such as preventing sensitive or duplicate content from being indexed, improving crawl efficiency by blocking unnecessary sections of a website, or hiding private information.

However, it is important to note that the robots.txt file is a voluntary protocol, and some robots or malicious crawlers may ignore or not follow the instructions specified in it.
