To set up Google Analytics on a website, follow these steps:
- Sign Up for Google Analytics: Go to the Google Analytics homepage (https://analytics.google.com/) and click on the "Start for free" button. Sign in using your Google account or create a new one.
- Create a New Property: In the Google Analytics dashboard, click on the "Admin" button located at the bottom-left corner. Under the "Property" column, click on the drop-down menu and select "Create Property." Enter your website's details such as the website name, URL, and industry category. Click on "Create" to proceed.
- Get Your Tracking Code: After creating the property, you will be directed to a page with your unique tracking code. Copy the code, which begins with "", and paste it into every page of your website. Insert the code just before the closing tag.
Note: If you are using a content management system (CMS) like WordPress, you can install a plugin (e.g., Google Site Kit or Insert Headers and Footers) that allows you to add the tracking code without editing the theme files manually.
- Verify Your Tracking Code: To ensure that the tracking code is working correctly, you can use Google Analytics Debugger. Install the extension for your web browser (e.g., Google Analytics Debugger for Chrome). Open a new tab in your browser, load your website, and view the Developer Console. Look for a message that says "Google Analytics" or "analytics.js" and check for any errors.
- Set Up Goals: Goals allow you to track specific actions on your website, such as form submissions, button clicks, or page views. To set up goals, go back to the Google Analytics dashboard and click on the "Admin" button. Under the "View" column, click on "Goals." Click on the "+ New Goal" button and follow the steps to define your goal.
Once you have completed these steps, Google Analytics will start collecting data about your website visitors, and you can access various reports and insights in the Google Analytics dashboard to analyze your website's performance.
